What is Mounjaro Injection?

Mounjaro is an FDA-approved medication designed to help adults aged 18 and older with type 2 diabetes by lowering blood sugar levels. It is administered once a week as an injection and is best used alongside a healthy diet and regular physical activity.

Mounjaro & Weight Loss

Though Mounjaro is primarily intended for managing type 2 diabetes, it has shown to support significant weight loss in some patients with the condition. However, it’s important to note that Mounjaro is not a weight loss medication and is not FDA-approved for this purpose.

How Does Mounjaro Work?

Mounjaro works by targeting both GLP-1 and GIP receptors in the body, which has been shown to lead to substantial weight loss in clinical trials. Despite its promising results, there is still much to learn about the long-term effects of Mounjaro and its full potential.
The medication helps manage blood sugar levels by increasing insulin production, decreasing sugar production in the liver, and slowing the digestion process in the stomach.

Mounjaro Side Effects & Restrictions

Mounjaro should not be used by individuals with type 1 diabetes, those who have a history of pancreatitis, or anyone with a personal or family history of thyroid cancer.
Common side effects may include:
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Constipation
  • In some cases, more serious side effects can occur, such as:
  • Pancreatitis
  • Kidney failure
  • Thyroid disorders
  • It is crucial to talk to your doctor before starting Mounjaro to ensure it’s the right treatment for you.

    Important Information Before Using Mounjaro

Before starting Mounjaro, be sure to inform your healthcare provider about any pre-existing medical conditions, especially if you:
  • Have a history of severe stomach problems, such as delayed stomach emptying (gastroparesis) or difficulties with digestion.
  • Have diabetic retinopathy.
  • Are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. While it’s not clear whether Mounjaro affects an unborn baby, it’s important to discuss potential risks with your doctor.
  • Use birth control pills. Mounjaro may reduce the effectiveness of oral contraceptives, so your healthcare provider may suggest a different form of birth control for the first four weeks of treatment and after each dose increase. Be sure to discuss your options with your doctor.
  • Are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed. It’s unclear if Mounjaro passes into breast milk, so speak with your healthcare provider to determine the best approach for feeding your baby while using Mounjaro.
It’s always best to consult with your healthcare provider for personalized advice before starting any new treatment.
