Thyroid Surgery is also known as Thyroidectomy. Your thyroid is a butterfly shaped organ situated at the base of your neck and is responsible for producing hormones that control every aspect of your metabolism, ranging from your heart rate to how quickly your burn calories. However, Thyroidectomy is used to treat thyroid disorders, such as cancer, noncancerous enlargement of the thyroid (goiter) and overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism).

Your doctor may recommend a surgery in case if you have the following conditions:

• Overactive Thyroid: This condition is also known as Hyperthyroidism. In this condition, your thyroid starts producing thyroxine hormone abnormally.
• Thyroid Cancer: Thyroid Cancer is the most common cause for a thyroidectomy. In this condition, of not all, then most of the affected area of your thyroid will be removed.
• Noncancerous Enlargement of the Thyroid (Goiter): Removing all or part of your thyroid gland is an option if you have a large goiter that is uncomfortable or causes difficulty breathing or swallowing or, in some cases, if the goiter is causing hyperthyroidism.
• Indeterminate or suspicious thyroid nodules: Doctors may recommend that people with these nodules have thyroidectomy if the nodules have an increased risk of being cancerous.
