Osteoporosis<\/span> <\/span><\/h2>\t\t\t\t\t

Osteoporosis is\u00a0a disease that weakens bones to the point where they break easily<\/b>\u00a0\u2014 most often, bones in the hip, backbone (spine), and wrist. Osteoporosis is called a \u201csilent disease\u201d because you may not notice any changes until a bone breaks. All the while, though, your bones had been losing strength for many years.<\/p>

Osteoporosis causes bones to become weak and brittle \u2014 so brittle that a fall or even mild stresses such as bending over or coughing can cause a fracture. Osteoporosis-related fractures most commonly occur in the hip, wrist or spine.<\/p>

Bone is living tissue that is constantly being broken down and replaced. Osteoporosis occurs when the creation of new bone doesn’t keep up with the loss of old bone.<\/p>

Osteoporosis affects men and women of all races. But white and Asian women, especially older women who are past menopause, are at highest risk. Medications, healthy diet and weight-bearing exercise can help prevent bone loss or strengthen already weak bones.<\/p>
