Description

A childhood infection causing an itchy rash with fluid-filled blisters that a vaccine can prevent.

Overview

The varicella-zoster virus causes chickenpox. The virus spreads easily to people who haven’t had chickenpox or the chickenpox vaccine. Although often mild, chickenpox can be serious and lead to other health conditions. A vaccine can prevent chickenpox.

Symptoms

Chickenpox mainly causes an itchy rash that turns into blisters that break and scab over. Other symptoms may include fever, not wanting to eat, headache and tiredness.

Treatments

Chickenpox often needs no medical treatment. Some people may take medicine to ease the itch. People at high risk of serious illness and those with other health conditions may take antiviral medicine.
