Any of a group of infectious diseases that affect many of the body’s organs and may lower the blood’s ability to clot.
Viral hemorrhagic fevers are caused by viruses found naturally in animals or insects, most often in tropical areas. These viruses spread through contact with infected animals, insects or people. There are many viral hemorrhagic fevers, including yellow fever, Ebola disease and Lassa fever.
Viral hemorrhagic fever symptoms differ based on the virus that causes them. Early symptoms can include fever, tiredness, dizziness, achiness, upset stomach and loose stools. Life-threatening symptoms can include shock, coma, and bleeding under the skin or from the mouth, eyes or ears.
There’s no treatment for most viral hemorrhagic fevers other than support to prevent losing too much fluid and to help with breathing. Some medicines may shorten the course of certain viral hemorrhagic fevers.
