Pediatric Endodontics

Pediatric Endodontics

Pediatric Endodontics plays a primary role in the Pediatric Dentistry as its focal point is to deal with the roots and internal structure of the teeth along with the aim to preserve a damaged or an injured tooth in babies. An Endodontist are masters in saving teeth by repairing the internal structure of the teeth known as pulp and roots. A pulp is made of blood vessels nerves, and certain connective tissues. Roots plays the role of holding the teeth unitedly.

What are the symptoms Pediatric Endodontics in Children?

Following are the symptoms of Pediatric Endodontics in children:

  • Chipped, fractured teeth or teeth that have been knocked out
  • Extensive Tooth Decay
  • Infected Teeth
  • Painful Teeth
  • Root Damage

What is Endodontic Treatment?

An endodontic treatment is usually performed on the permanent teeth of a child also known as non-vital pulp therapy. In this treatment, an endodontist performs a root canal on a child’s teeth by giving the child anesthesia to numb the pain. Afterwards, the endodontist will remove the inflammation or infected pulp from the inner chamber. They will carefully disinfect the area and then seal it.

However, with vital pulp therapy, your child’s pulp may be spared or partially removed depending on the infection’s extent. Anyhow, there are four types of vital pulp therapy for baby teeth which includes:

  • Protective Base: this procedure is performed in a case when a child’s tooth gets decayed, but the pulp has not been affected. The endodontist will remove the decay, placing a protective material in the tooth before placing the filling.
  • Indirect Pulp Cap: a condition where the decay comes closer to the pulp but still not touching it completely. The endodontist will remove most of the child’s decay and will place a protective dressing near the pulp so that the decay does not damage the pulp.
  • Direct Pulp Cap: decay caused by an injury or decay removal can also affect the child’s tooth. However, a medicine would be placed on your child’s exposed pulp to protect it hence protecting it by covering with a crown.
Vital Pulpotomy, a vital pulpotomy is performed when a child’s tooth is affected y decay or injured trauma, but the root part remains healthy. The endodontist will remove the decayed, or infected/injured pulp thus leaving the tooth’s healthy root alone. The inside of the tooth will be filled with a protective material and will be covered with a crown.
