VBAC (vaginal birth after a caesarean)

A caesarean section, also known as a C-section, is a surgical procedure in which a baby is delivered through an incision in the mother's abdomen and uterus. Once a woman has had a C-section, the option for a vaginal birth in subsequent pregnancies is often considered. This type of delivery is called Vaginal Birth After Cesarean (VBAC). In this article, we will discuss the benefits, risks, and considerations of VBAC.

Benefits of VBAC

VBAC has been found to have several potential benefits for both mother and baby. These include:

  • Reduced risk of infection: Compared to repeat C-sections, VBAC has a lower risk of infection.
  • Reduced risk of blood loss: VBAC is associated with less blood loss than repeat C-sections.
  • Reduced recovery time: Recovery after a VBAC is generally faster than recovery after a repeat C-section.
  • Reduced risk of complications in future pregnancies: A VBAC carries less risk of complications in future pregnancies.

Risks and Considerations

As with any form of delivery, there are certain risks and considerations associated with VBAC. These include:

  • Uterine rupture: The most significant risk associated with VBAC is the possibility of a uterine rupture. This is when the incision from the previous C-section tears open during labour. This is a rare but serious complication.
  • Failed VBAC: There is also a small chance that a VBAC attempt may fail, and a repeat C-section will be needed.
  • Emergency C-section: Sometimes, a VBAC may need to be converted to a C-section if there are complications during labour.

It is important to note that not all women are suitable candidates for VBAC, and it is essential to consult with your healthcare provider to understand the risks and benefits for you. The healthcare provider will take into account factors such as the size of the baby, the type of incision from the previous C-section, the duration of the previous pregnancy and the reasons for the previous C-section.

What do our Experts have to say?

VBAC can be a safe and viable option for women who have had a prior caesarean delivery. It has been found to have several potential benefits, including reduced risk of infection, reduced recovery time, and reduced risk of complications in future pregnancies. However, it is important to understand the risks and considerations associated with VBAC and to consult with your healthcare provider to ensure that it is the right choice for you. With the right preparation, guidance and support, a VBAC can be a beautiful and transformative experience for the mother and the baby. For more information, feel free to get in touch with us!
