Breast Surgery

Surgery for Breast Cancer

Breast surgery is a procedure that modifies a woman or man’s breasts. Such surgeries are done for a variety of reasons. Some are done for cosmetic reasons, such as to reconstruct the breast to look more youthful, or increase its size. Others are medically necessary such as a breast reduction for back pain or surgery to remove cancer.

Some common types of breast surgery include:

  • Mastectomy: removal of all or part of the breast tissue. This can be done for breast cancer or other benign breast conditions.
  • Lumpectomy: removal of a lump or tumor in the breast. This is also known as breast-conserving surgery.
  • Breast reconstruction: rebuilding of the breast after mastectomy. This can be done using breast implants or tissue from another part of the body.
  • Breast reduction: reduction in the size of the breast. This is typically done for cosmetic reasons, but can also be done to alleviate pain or other symptoms caused by large breasts.
  • Breast augmentation: enlargement of the breast using implants. This is typically done for cosmetic reasons.
  • Nipple and Areola surgery: Nipple correction, areola reduction, areola repositioning, and breast lift with or without augmentation.

It's important to consult with a qualified surgeon who is trained in breast surgery to determine the best course of treatment for your individual case.

Why does one need Breast Surgery?

There are several reasons why a person may need breast surgery:

  • Breast cancer: Surgery is the most common treatment for breast cancer, and may include a mastectomy (removal of all or part of the breast tissue) or a lumpectomy (removal of a lump or tumor in the breast).
  • Benign breast conditions: Surgery may be needed to treat benign conditions such as fibroadenomas (benign tumors in the breast), cysts, or abscesses.
  • Cosmetic reasons: Some people may choose to have breast surgery for cosmetic reasons, such as breast augmentation (enlargement of the breast using implants) or breast reduction (reduction in the size of the breast).
  • Reconstructive surgery: Surgery is also done in order to reconstruct the breast after the breast cancer treatment.
  • Congenital defects: Surgery may be needed to correct congenital defects of the breast, such as asymmetry or lack of development.

It is important to consult with our qualified surgeon who is trained in breast surgery to determine the best course of treatment for your individual case. Additionally, seeking a second opinion from another surgeon is also advised to make sure that you are getting the best care possible.
