PRIAPISM

What is Priapism?

Priapism is a condition in which a male experiences persistent and painful erections. The erections are not a result of sexual stimulation and delay in its treatment may cause erectile dysfunction.

What are the causes of Priapism?

Priapism most commonly affects people with sickle cell disease.
Other causes may include:

  • blood-thinning medicines, like warfarin
  • some antidepressants
  • recreational drugs, like cannabis and cocaine
  • some medicines for high blood pressure
  • other blood disorders, like thalassaemia and leukaemia
  • some treatments for erection problems

What are the symptoms of Priapism?

The symptom of Priapism depends upon the type of Priapism you have. If you have low flow priapism, then your symptoms might include:

  • Penis pain
  • Erections lasting for more than 4 hours
  • Rigid penile shaft with a soft tip

If you have high-flow priapism, you’ll have some of the same symptoms as low-flow priapism. The main difference is that pain doesn’t occur with high-flow priapism.

Treatment for Priapism:

Treatments to help reduce your erection include:

  • tablets or injections directly into your penis
  • using a needle to drain blood from your penis, done while the area is numbed under local anaesthetic
  • surgery to drain the blood through a tiny cut, done while you’re asleep under general anaesthetic
