Bladder Cancer

Bladder Cancer Treatment and Care

Bladder is a hollow organ located in your lower abdomen and its function is to store the urine. However, bladder cancer is a common type of cancer that begins in the cells of the bladder and growth of abnormal tissue, known as a tumour, develops in the bladder lining. In some cases, the tumour spreads into the bladder muscle.

In most cases of bladder cancer, it is caused by exposure to harmful substances, which lead to abnormal changes in the bladder’s cells over many years.

Tobacco smoke is a common cause and it’s estimated that more than 1 in 3 cases of bladder cancer are caused by smoking.

Lastly, contact with certain chemicals previously used in manufacturing is also known to cause bladder cancer. However, these substances have since been banned.

There are several symptoms of Bladder Cancer. These include:

  • Blood in the urine
  • Need to urinate on an urgent and more frequent basis
