Overactive Bladder Treatment

What is an Overactive Bladder?

Overactive bladder is not a disease but a combination of urinary symptoms. It is a frequent and sudden urge to urinate. Some people will leak the urine before getting to the toilet.

Causes of an Overactive Bladder:

Your kidney is responsible for producing urine that travels to your bladder. The brain sends the signal that tells your body to urinate. However, an overactive bladder causes the bladder muscles to contract involuntarily. This gives a feeling or sensation to urinate again ever after the bladder has been emptied. There are a few factors that lead to the causes of an overactive bladder. These include:

  • Urinary Tract Infections
  • Bladder abnormalities, such as bladder stones
  • Failure to completely empty the bladder
  • Parkinson’s disease or Multiple Sclerosis
  • Weak Pelvic Muscles
  • Excessive consumption of Coffee, tea, or alcohol
  • Herniated Disc

Symptoms of an Overactive Bladder:

An overactive bladder is determined by the urgency and frequency of urination. These include:

  • An urgent and uncontrollable need to urinate
  • Frequent involuntary loss of urine
  • Frequent Urination (more than eight times in a 24-hour period)
  • Waking up more than once a night to use the bathroom

Diagnosis of an Overactive Bladder:

Your doctor may complete several tests in order to diagnose the cause of your overactive bladder symptoms. Tests used to diagnose overactive bladder include:

  • Urine Sample (Urinalysis)
  • Physical examination
  • Bladder Scan
  • Urodynamic Testing
  • Cystoscopy

Treatment of an Overactive Bladder at Saudi German Hospital:

The urologists at the Saudi German Hospital are fully dedicated towards treating their patients the right way. They come with a decade of experience and multiple skills in treating the problem completely. However, following treatment procedures are being offered at the Saudi German Hospital for the treatment of an overactive bladder:

  • Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy: There are physical therapists who specialize in the muscles of the pelvis. Through targeted muscle exercises and strengthening, they can help manage a variety of urinary problems, including urgency, frequency, and nighttime symptoms.
  • Medication: Medications prescribed by the doctors will help in relieving symptoms and reducing the frequent episodes of urge and incontinence. These medicines include tolterodine (Detrol, Detrol LA), trospium (Sanctura), and mirabegron (Myrbetriq).
  • Nerve Stimulation: This procedure changes the electrical signal of the nerves that carry impulses to the bladder. This procedure can be performed using a small wire inserted into the low back or a small needle inserted through the skin of the lower leg.
  • Surgery: Your doctor might suggest surgery in a case where above mentioned treatments do not seem to have been working on you and your symptoms are getting worse.
