Flexible sigmoidoscopy is a procedure that is used to examine the lower portion of the large intestine, also known as the colon. It involves the use of a thin, flexible tube with a light and camera on the end, which is inserted through the rectum and into the colon. The procedure is typically performed in a hospital or outpatient facility and is used to diagnose and treat conditions such as colorectal cancer, diverticulitis, and inflammatory bowel disease.

Flexible sigmoidoscopy is a diagnostic procedure, the treatment options will depend on the underlying condition found during the examination, some examples include:
Colorectal cancer
If cancer is detected during the procedure, further treatment options may include surgery to remove the cancerous tissue, radiation therapy, and/or chemotherapy.
Diverticulitis
Treatment options for diverticulitis may include antibiotics to clear up an infection, and a liquid or low-fiber diet to allow the colon to heal.
Polyps
If polyps are found during the procedure, they can be removed during the same procedure or scheduled for a follow up colonoscopy.
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)
If IBD is diagnosed, treatment options will depend on the type of IBD, medication options are usually the first line of treatment, including anti-inflammatory drugs and immune system suppressors.
It’s worth noting that not all conditions require treatment, some may be just monitored, and your doctor will discuss with you the best options based on the diagnosis and your individual case.
