Esophageal diseases refer to a group of conditions that affect the esophagus, the muscular tube that connects the mouth to the stomach. Common esophageal diseases include:
  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD): This is a condition in which stomach acid flows back into the esophagus, causing heartburn and other symptoms.
  • Barrett’s esophagus: This is a condition in which the cells in the lining of the esophagus change and become abnormal, increasing the risk of esophageal cancer.
  • Esophageal stricture: This is a condition in which the esophagus becomes narrowed, making it difficult to swallow.
  • Esophageal cancer: This is a serious condition in which cancer cells form in the lining of the esophagus.
