Oral Rehabilitative Care under General Anesthesia & Conscious Sedation

Dentists commonly describe Oral Rehabilitative Care as ‘a biomedical operative processes such as the complex restoration of teeth or the dental arch or as the treatment of ailing, injured or disabled patients with the aim to restore normal (oral) health and function and ⁄ or to prevent the disability from getting worse’.

What is Rehabilitative Care with General Anesthesia and Conscious Sedation?

General Anesthesia or Conscious sedation is used to facilitate adults or children with special needs like mental or physical disabilities. General anesthesia and conscious sedation is given to a patient with their consent or with the consent of their guardian. Moreover, the use of general anesthesia and methods of conscious sedation in rehabilitative oral care are all central components of care for patients who are frequently anxious about receiving dental treatment. Conscious sedation and general anesthesia are provided when appropriate, in a skilled manner and in the correct environment, is widely used, valuable and effective.

General anesthesia is generally used for more intensive procedures such as dental implant placement, impacted wisdom teeth removal, or more extensive oral surgery In general anesthesia, a drug is induced into the patient’s body during a surgical process and puts a patient into a deep sleep. The patient will completely lose his/her consciousness and will not be able to feel anything around the affected area.

Conscious Sedation is a type of numbing medication that is injected directly into the area that is going to be treated. This is usually injected around the affected tooth. This type of anesthesia is used for a minor surgery that can be completed relatively quickly, such as filling a cavity. During a procedure with conscious sedation, you will remain awake but will not feel any pain. However, you will feel the pressure of dental instruments. Local anesthesia is safe and carries very few side effects. After your procedure using local anesthesia, you can expect to feel numbness in your lips, cheek, and gums lasting for a few hours following the procedure.
